But time, it appears, heals all wounds. It's hard to imagine a category of the wine world that's hotter or more fashionable than rosé right now. A great number of these wines are actually better than drinkable, and some of them are flat-out superb.

Fortunately that isn't necessary with rosé, as I discovered recently while tasting through well over 200 pink wines for my annual rosé round-up in the International Wine Cellar. Of the more than 100 wines I have singled out for their quality, a surprising number of them carry suggested retail prices in the $15 neighborhood, which means that they might be found for as little as $12 in some markets. There are two ways to accomplish this. Following the pressing of the red grapes the juice is allowed to sit in contact with the color-imparting skins (with extremely rare exception the juice of all grapes is white) just long enough to pick up a bit of color before it is moved off the skins to finish fermentation. The second way of making rosé is to drain juice that has begun to take on color from the fermentation tank. This approach has the added benefit, or consequence, of concentrating the red wine left behind as it decreases its proportion of juice to grape skins. In many parts of the world producers simply blend white wine with enough red wine to get some color, added aroma and flavor, but it's rare to find a high-quality rosé that's made this way--especially in Europe, where it is illegal.

Grenache and Syrah
Cotes de Provence

I have just recently spent some time in Provence and I can attest to the fact that the region is as pretty as the pale pink color of its rose wines. And equally pretty, I've always thought, is the label of Domaine Houchart. I was at the domaine last week and I asked Florence Quiot if there was any rhyme or reason to the design on the label. Florence told me that there is in fact a story in her family about the label. She said that she has been told that the pattern in the corners of the label came from a fabric pattern that was on a dress of her grandmother's. She said that the colors are traditional to the region and so the design was made to envoke the rich visual heritage of Provence. In the center of the label is a shadow of a tree which Florence told me was an almond tree. It just so happens that the tree is located right on the property of the estate and you can see it in the picture I took with my Blackberry below.

What Makes This Wine Special?

Sheri Sauter Morano, MW says:
The Domaine Houchart rosé from Provence is a consistent winner. While rosés have a reputation for being sweet and simple, this wine has some substance and structure. Notes of blackberries and raspberries are balanced by aromas of lavender and spice. With a slight tannic grip and a juicy finish this wine is food-friendly and refreshing.
