Grenache and Syrah
Cotes de Provence
I have just recently spent some time in Provence and I can attest to the fact that the region is as pretty as the pale pink color of its rose wines. And equally pretty, I've always thought, is the label of Domaine Houchart. I was at the domaine last week and I asked Florence Quiot if there was any rhyme or reason to the design on the label. Florence told me that there is in fact a story in her family about the label. She said that she has been told that the pattern in the corners of the label came from a fabric pattern that was on a dress of her grandmother's. She said that the colors are traditional to the region and so the design was made to envoke the rich visual heritage of Provence. In the center of the label is a shadow of a tree which Florence told me was an almond tree. It just so happens that the tree is located right on the property of the estate and you can see it in the picture I took with my Blackberry below.
